Morning Folks 11 15 05

November comes
And November goes,
With the last red berries
And the first white snows.
With night coming early,
And dawn coming late,
And ice in the bucket
And frost by the gate.

The fires burn
And the kettles sing,
And earth sinks to rest
Until next spring.
- Clyde Watson

No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease,
No comfortable feel in any member -
No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees,
No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds -
November!

- Thomas Hood, No!

A few days ago I walked along the edge of the lake and was treated
to the crunch and rustle of leaves with each step I made.
The acoustics
of this season are different and all sounds, no matter how hushed,
are as crisp as autumn air.
- Eric Sloane

The name 'November' is believed to derive from 'novem' which is the Latin
for the number 'nine'. In the ancient Roman calendar November was the
ninth month after March. As part of the seasonal calendar November is
the time of the 'Snow Moon' according to Pagan beliefs and the period
described as the 'Moon of the Falling Leaves' by Black Elk.

The stripped and shapely
Maple grieves
The ghosts of her
Departed leaves.

The ground is hard,
As hard as stone.
The year is old,
The birds are flown.

And yet the world,
In its distress,
Displays a certain
Loveliness---

- John Updike, A Child's Calendar

Saw the rainbow in the heaven,
In the eastern sky the rainbow,
Whispered, "What is that, Nokomis?"
And the good Nokomis answered:
"'Tis the heaven of flowers you see there;
All the wild-flowers of the forest,
All the lilies of the prairie,
When on earth they fade and perish,
Blossom in that heaven above us.

- Henry Wadsworth Longellow, Song of Hiawatha

Have a great Tuesday, even though it's November!

Love,
Suz

  1. November is a great month! Lots of fun birthdays, good food, and that occasional warm day to remind us that spring and summer will return.

  2. I like November. It means the craziness of the summer people are gone and we have Cape Cod to ourselves again. There are some warm, beautiful days here even in winter.

  3. I did forget it was Melinda's birthday month. So, there are some VERY good things about November, indeed!
